Earnshaw banks on old heads to beat the drop

BEES director of rugby Russell Earnshaw has already shared his dream for 2012 with his team - and that’s for Bimingham and Solihull Rugby Club to avoid relegation into National League 2.

It’s a tall order too, especially as Bees are currently propping up National League 1 with 16 points, six points adrift from second bottom Barking and 14 behind next placed Stourbridge with the bottom three teams relegated.

It means they have to overhaul fourth from bottom Cinderford, on 32 points, to secure their future in the league.

Can they do it? Earnshw believes so, especially as the cavalry are riding over the hill to the rescue in the shape of players back from injury, the return of familiar faces, and the prospect of recruiting new talent.

“The players already know my wish for 2012,” says the England Sevens coach, “and I need the people to stay alongside me ho share that vision for us to achieve it.”

Fly half Mark Woodrow has returned from Stourbridge and will stay with the club for the rest of the season - even putting in a cameo role as replacement scrum half against Cinderford.

He will put pressure on the incumbent No10 Dan Hawkes who has a tendency to stand deeper to have time to kick, but consequently gives the opposition time to come up.

A host of walking wounded - and club favourites - are also set to return, from skipper Jack Preece to back rowers Mark Hopley and Rob Connolly, who can double up as an impact centre.

“I just want the players to continue to get better and to believe in themselves,” said Earnshaw. “We know we are tactically and physically competing to the same degree as when we were winning games previously. We just need to get our mindset round to the fact that we can do this.”
