Birmingham Wyvern 6 Birmingham Exiles 15
EXILES made it through to the last 16 (First Round) of the North Midlands Vase in their preliminary round tie against Hopwood-based Birmingham Wyvern.
It was the first competitive outing of the season for both clubs and this was reflected in the error count for both sides. Overall though, Es probably made fewer mistakes. The home side had more bulk in their forwards, but E’s pack were in aggressive mood and had the better of the forward exchanges.
With about ten minutes left, came the clinching score. Es kicked a penalty into touch some five metres from the home line. This was followed by a textbook catch and drive form the Exiles’ pack that saw prop Tristan Russell emerge from a heap of bodies to claim the try.
There was still time – just, perhaps – for Wyvern to rescue the game but E’s were lasting the pace a bit better and held out for the win, which, overall they deserved.
Exiles will now be at home in the next (“First”) round to Shropshire side Cleobury Mortimer next Saturday [Sept 7th] [KO 3pm]
