B’ham Exiles 6 Wellesbourne 5
DESPERATE defending by Exiles brought this most welcome victory by the narrowest of margins.
They began brightly enough as Johnstone made a good break, but the move ended in a knock on. After 15 or so minutes, however, another attack down the right flank yielded a penalty to the hosts and stand off Dan Johnstone kicked an excellent goal from the touchline.
It was then Es’ turn to come under pressure: they defended well but conceded a penalty. The visitors chose to scrummage rather than go for goal and the next passage of play ended with Exiles gaining a relieving penalty.
Five minutes before the break, Johnstone kicked his second penalty goal to make 6-0.
Close to the home line, Wellesbourne once again opted for a scrum when awarded a penalty. Scrum half Mark Aston found an inviting gap and went over in the corner for a try that cut the gap to just one point. But the conversion was missed.
In the closing minutes, Wellesbourne had a chance to grab the win via a penalty goal attempt, but the kick went wide and Es clung on.
