INJURY-HIT Bees will have their ranks decimated still further this weekend following the departure of winger Simon Hunt and scrum half John Brake ahead of Saturday’s trip to Rotherham Titans.
Both players are Commonwealth Games bound as part of England Sevens squad which will also includes Bees Director of Rugby Russell Earnshaw who is assistant coach to the side.
Bees’ backs coach Eugene Martin assumes command for the trip to Yorkshire and admits it will be like David taking on Goliath in the light of his side’s disappointing start to the Championship campaign which has yet to see them register a single point from five outings to date.
Martin will be relieved just to get a team on the pitch at this rate as Bees injury curse struck again during midweek training when back row player Jack Preece bruised his quad muscle and looks likely to miss out against Rotherham.
It leaves Bees with just 24 fit players but Martin refuses to wrap his players up in cotton wool and added: “We’ve done quite a bit of contact work this week, it was a case of getting back to basics.
“In our last three games we’ve been in a winning position only to let ourselves down.
“It’s all about making crucial decisions at crucial situations. I only hope we make the right decisions against Rotherham."
Martin confirmed he would be changing goalkickers against Rotherham with winger Tomasi Tanumi and Rod Petty taking over in the light of Sam Robinson’s poor return against fellow strugglers Plymouth Albion last Sunday.
Greg Sammons also looks certain to feature as hooker after Dan Ostleton snapped his achilles during the opening exchanges against Plymouth.
