Lions legend passes on pride to youngsters

EX-England and British Lion, John ‘Bentos’ Bentley, was the special guest at Old Saltleians RC’s annual clubman’s dinner last month.

The former Leeds wingman visited the Water Orton-based club to help with a junior training session as well as presenting the end-of-season awards.

Bentley, who is currently director of rugby at his hometown club Cleckheaten RUFC in Yorkshire, put the youngsters through their paces focussing on basic skills and the importance of good communication.

After a quiet start the lads warmed to the direct coaching style of Bentos and were soon shouting instructions to each other.

In the evening, over sixty players and supporters enjoyed Bentos’ northern humour as he regaled them with tales of the 1997 Lions tour to South Africa; the laughs, the characters, the traumas of room-sharing and the privileges of playing.

The prestigious Player of the Year award was presented to Pete ‘AJ’ Harris however the evening ended on a sad note as first team captain Chris Newman made a presentation to Salts Head Coach, Ally Hope, who has decided to step down after three years to focus on his own sporting career.
