AN 18-year-old student from Solihull has played a rugby international for England.

Lewis Grinsell represented his country in an Under 19s match against Wales at Newport Gwent Dragons’ last Tuesday, January 24, where they lost 13-10.

Hooker Lewis, who plays for Hartbury College and Moseley Rugby Club, impressed when he played for North Midlands in his programme of county matches before Christmas.

He was also included in the Midlands squad to prepare for the Divisional Festival at Broadstreet RFC near Coventry.

Lewis’s father Robert said he is so proud of his son, who is busy studying for his A levels.

“I am extremely proud of Lewis,” he said. “It’s not every day you can say you have played for England. Obviously Lewis was ecstatic, it was a wonderful Christmas present for him because we found out he had been selected on December 29.

“He thoroughly enjoyed playing and although England lost, Lewis played exceptionally well and got excellent feedback.

“Over 1,000 people came to watch the match, it was a great atmosphere.”
