Newbold 10 Old Silhillians 15
AFTER the big freeze Sils were hungry for some competitive rugby hoping that the momentum from their recent run of form had not melted away during the break.
Sils travelled to a Newbold team unbeaten at home all season, in fact, the Rugby-based side, had not lost at home in two years until the visit of a Sils team that are starting to make a habit of winning against the top four sides in Midland 2 (west).
Sils were down by 10 after just 10 minutes but soon warmed up. The sides continued to trade blows making no impression on the scoreboard until 5 minutes before half time. Tom Waters shrugged off challenges to touch down in the corner which really lifted the visiting side.
Indeed, just minutes later a quick lineout by Harry Law and captain Jim Roper upped the tempo before Tom Waters forced a penalty in front of the post which Steve Hawkins dispatched.
The interval may have come at the wrong time for Sils but after soaking early second half pressure, including a superb try saving tackle by Cameron Law, Sils slowly grasped more control of the game. No. 8 Cameron Law made a break to set up Dave Edwards for the second try and with a successful conversion Sils now turned the screw.
Sils play Cheltenham North at Copt Heath on Saturday.
