Rugby Welsh 12 Birmingham Exiles 25
EXILES put in probably their best performance of the season in their basement battle with Rugby Welsh to complete their first league ‘double’ of the campaign.
A penalty by winger Alex Warrillow gave Exiles an early lead before a Dan Johnstone kick and chase resulted in the fly half diving over to score, Warrillow converting. Welsh cut the deficit by five points but another Warrilow penalty kept Exiles ticking over.
The next try would be significant and it was E’s who claimed it: a break by Johnstone ending with Warrillow joining the try scorers’ list. An interception extended the lead further, Calum McGee crossing for the score, Warrillow again converting. Welsh duly hit back but it was too little too late and Exile ran out worthy winners.
Their win still leaves them in last-but-one place in the league table, but the boost to their morale from a fine all-round performance was clear – and well-earned.
