Yardley & District 24 Old Edwardians 27
A STERN half time team talk by Eds coach John Corr turned almost certain defeat into a last gasp victory for Edwardians in this local derby.
The visitors were struggling to hang onto the ball in the tight and were lucky to find themselves only 10-3 behind at half time after the referee flourished yellow cards to first prop Gareth Symes and then Number 8 Luke Mason for retaliation.
However Corr’s ear bashing put some backbone into Eds and they bounced back through a Daniel Johnson try from full back, fly half David Gray adding the extras to level the scores.
Y&D’s centre was then yellow carded for a late tackle and, now back up to 15, Eds immediately went on the attack, Johnson crossing for his second to score under the posts. Gray again added the two points.
A penalty try after a series of five metre scrums brought the score level again but then a quick tap saw Johnson enter the line at speed to touch down for his hat-trick, once again under the posts. Gray made no mistake with the goal kick.
However Y&D weren’t finished and after once again winning turnover ball, their winger scored in the corner, a superb touchline kick bringing the scores level for the fourth time.
With the game now anyone’s for the taking, Eds won a penalty outside the 22 in the closing play of the game. Up stepped Gray to slot it home as the full time whistle blew.
Next week Eds are at home to Willenhall, kick off 3pm.
