Yards go through at a canter against Uttoxeter in the junior vase

Old Yardleians 30

Ys started impressively in this Midlands section quarter final of the RFU Junior Vase and quickly registered three penalties from Jake White and a try from Phil Painter to finish the first half 14 points to the good.

Having weathered an early assault, a loose clearance kick was picked up by Uttoxeter and ran back with interest as they crossed the line to score a try which was also converted to narrow the gap to 14 – 7.

However from this point onwards the superior fitness of the Yards team ensured that the home side would not score again, White kicking three more penalties to make it 23 – 7.

Winger Jim Hendrick then combined with Number 8 Steve Grainger with a succession of passes which ended with full back Sean Rai touching down and with White converting it became 30 – 7.

Tomorrow Ys return to league action with a home game against Coventrians kick off at 2.15pm.

As a gesture of seasonal goodwill and cheer, entry to the match and car parking will be free.
