On the slide

AFTER making my morning coffee and setting about another day of relaxing - being thankful I am a teacher and thus deserve to enjoy my time away from the job of shaping this country’s youth - I was disgusted, but not surprised to read yet another story of an innocent young man attacked by ‘knife monsters’ (Solihull News).Read

Be thankful

Being a resident of Solihull and a regular reader of the Solihull News I feel that some local residents should take a reality check on the news items that appear to be so upsetting to local people.Read

Hard choices

LAST week we, in common with all the householders in Monkspath, received circulars from two estate agents saying they had several clients for our houses and we know when one around hear goes on to the market it is snapped up immediately, proving that Westbury, Bryants, McAlpine and Co know their market.Read

Bus pass folly

SO the coalition government is now thinking of taking away bus passes from the elderly. Many older people lead relatively solitary lives, particularly if they have lost a partner.Read

Refuse bag is rubbish

Whilst we wholeheartedly support the council’s efforts to deal with re-cycling and do our very best to comply with their wishes, we find we are being thwarted by the boxes and bags they have supplied us with.Read

Citizens again

GIVEN the opportunity, how many of us would patrol the streets armed with a speed camera?Read

A football great writes

WHEN it comes to prostate cancer men are confused. I certainly was. There’s so much uncertainty surrounding the diagnosis and treatment it’s enough to scare most men.Read

Workers day

So Lorely Burt visited the Hindus Teachers day event and now feels that teachers should have their own day and they deserve the six weeks summer holiday.Read

Keep it clean

In his letter (Solihull News July 23) Councillor Timothy Hodgson states that the Conservatives are ‘now keen to deny their policies’ What arrant nonsense!Read

Right answers

ACADEMIES may not be a universal panacea for poor performance but the opposition from two councillors (Letters July 30) seems based on selective memory rather than rational argument.Read

Schools alert

Councillor Tildesley (Letters) was correct in saying the Tories planned to encourage schools to go it alone if they won the last election, but I’m sure many voters did not expect the Liberal Democrats in Parliament to support this headlong rush to break up the family of schools that, here in Solihull, has served us so well for many years.Read

Mystery meet

I would like to know if anyone was invited to the ‘public workshop’ last Saturday regarding Sainsburys in Dorridge.Read

Dog bite alert

LAST Sunday July 25 in the nature reserve close to St Alphege Junior School, my children were out cycling with their Dad.Read

Post box alert

I HAVE lived in the borough for 48 years - and there has always been a postbox in this same spot (Widney Lane).Read

Appeal starts now

SHIRLEY has a great tradition of Christmas lights along the Stratford Road. In the last couple of years it has been difficult, but we still managed to keep the tradition going, and I don’t know anyone who would want 2010 to break it.Read

Get off your horse

I READ K J Bates letter - Lump in Road (July 16) and found it quite thought provoking. As a dog owner who always clears up after my pet.........or faces the possibility of being fined up to £1,000.......it is interesting that horse riders do not have to clean up their rather larger piles of mess.Read

Failing figures

FIGURES for the population of Britain are a little sketchy and I was never very good with percentages, but I can work out that Britain is in a mess, you know as Christians we are always being asked why stuff happens.Read

Getting there

I WISH to respond to the letters on Solihull’s kerbside waste and recycling service. I stand accused by some of being ‘patronising’ and one Tory councillor alleges I have ignored residents who have purple sacks for their general waste rather than a black wheelie bin.Read

A cheer for Grosvenor

ON July 24 the staff of Grosvenor buses, who have been servicing the S4 route for the best part of the last two years, will run the last buses on that route.Read

Wrong question

I LOOKED at the planning documents for the Waitrose development in Knowle.Read
