THE message from our recent online poll at www.solihullnews.net is unequivocal - protect our green belt.
That’s the issue that matters most to our readers as Solihull Council works on the difficult project of developing the next local plan - the blueprint for the borough for the coming 15 years.
Against that they’ve got to balance encouraging more jobs to the area and the need to build affordable housing, care for the elderly and creating a fairer society - which incidently came last in our poll.
The strength of feeling over the green belt, and indeed any patch of land, whether back garden or green field can be gauged by the opposition to build on it.
Then there is the issue of social housing - few people like the idea of ‘social housing’ near them and it would appear few developers are prepared to build it - prefering the fatter profits from des res.
The bottom line is though that the borough lacks affordable homes and that renting isn’t the poor person’s option.
In an age which bemoans the lack of strong leadership, Solihull council needs to come up with a strong viable plan and then go out and sell it.
