Walks into History - Warwickshire, John Wilks.

WAR, plague and pagan rites - that’s life in Warwickshire for you.

Well yes, it’s been a few hundred years, but it got your attention didn’t it? I hope so, because this new book is well worth picking up.

John Wilks has picked 14-routes in Shakespeare’s County - ranging in distance from three to eight miles.

While only one of the walks (Temple Balsall) falls inside Solihull borough, there are several more just a couple of miles from our borders.

Henley-in-Arden, Baddesley Clinton and Wootton Wawen are some of those places to feature in the book.

There’s maps and clear directions, so you’ll be able to follow the routes easily enough - even if you weren’t in the scouts.

But this book is far more than a paper-back Sat Nav. Sprinkled through the text are passages which delve into the area’s rich history

What part did Warwickshire play in the Gunpowder Plot? How did the fearsome Knights Templar come to the area? There are answers here.

And last but not least there are the little blue boxes, which appear every few pages and offer helpful hints about where to grab a drink when you’re done.
