DISNEY on Ice’s annual visit to the Midlands is looked forward to by thousands of young fans.
The ice skating spectacular is without doubt one of the biggest events on the NIA calendar.
Recent years have seen the retelling of popular Disney blockbusters, such as The Incredibles or Finding Nemo.
This year’s offering was more of a Disney variety show and all the better for it.
Sometimes trying to retell an animated classic on ice can be a tall order, one is constantly comparing it to the film and when it comes to special effects and fluidity it inevitably falls short.
This year’s Princess Wishes show is much more suited to the medium of an ice dancing show. Rather than trying to retell an entire film it takes parts of favourite Disney princess tales and recreates them.
Consequently you get extracts from Aladdin, Snow White, Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, Mulan, Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella. Even Tinker Bell and Minnie Mouse make appearances along the way.
The added variety makes for a much more entertaining show and works far better when it comes to holding the attention span of youngsters. Scenes, settings and costumes are constantly changing and the action comes thick and fast.
The choreography is carefully thought out and pretty much every segment manages to evoke an atmosphere and flavour of the original Disney screen adaptation, with the possible exception of Mulan, which seemed a little like a superfluous addition.
