CLARE Buckfield loves sinking her teeth into a new musical role, even if it means that a bloodythirsty plant gets its own choppers around her.
Since the start of the year, the actress has been starring in Little Shop of Horrors – stopping off at theatres around Britain.
Next week the tour comes to a close, with a five-night run at the Wolverhampton Grand. The Solihull News caught up with Clare to find out how the show has gone.
“It’s a great way of seeing the country,” she explained. “I’ve been to lots of theatres with different shows, but actually there’s always a couple of new ones that I’ve never seen before. Having said that, I’m sure I’ll get around them all eventually.”
After several years doing straight plays – and a stint in Dancing on Ice – she’s enjoyed going back into a musical.
“This one has got a bit of everything,” she said. “It’s a love story set in a florists, but there’s some scary moments too. You’ve got a psychotic dentist (played by Eastenders’ Alex Ferns), and a plant which feeds on people.”
And it’s not the first time that Clare has paid a visit to the little florists on Skid Row. She’d appeared in the musical a few years ago, and was looking forward to stepping back into Audrey’s shoes for a longer period.
“It’s a great show with great people in it,” she said. “The thing about touring regional theatres is that it can be very rewarding, but also punishing at times. Sometimes you never know what kind of reception you are going to get, but from past experience I know we’ll get a good welcome in the Midlands!”
* Little Shop of Horrors will be on from October 13-17. Tickets are available from the Wolverhampton Grand on 01902 42 92 12 or www.grandtheatre.co.uk
