TWO years since she shot to fame on The X-Factor, Niki Evans is about to appear in her very first pantomime.
Although she lives in Tamworth these days, the singer was actually born in Marston Green and spent her childhood in north Solihull.
In fact one of her highlights next year will be a concert at Solihull Arts Complex - her first show back in the borough. But before that there’s a six-week stint at the Wolverhampton Grand, where Niki is appearing in Cinderella.
“It’s the first time I’ve done a panto and it’s a fantastic experience - they’ve got me flying, they’ve got me in a dress, all sorts,” she said
“Performing in the Midlands is a god-send, it means I get to be with my family over Christmas.”
It’s been a crazy couple of years for the singer, who reached the semi finals in the 2007 series of The X-Factor.
Although she’s recently returned from a year-long stint in the West End, Niki said she likes nothing better than coming home.
“I did enjoy performing in London, there I was, a girl from Chelmsley Wood, playing the leading lady in the West End. But it’s so much nicer being down the road from where you grew up, compared to a bedsit on the other side of the country.”
And once she’s hung up her wand and wings, thoughts will be turning to next year’s schedule - including the Solihull performance.
“I’m really looking forward to going back to my hometown. It’s nice to be somewhere that you know and where people sound the same as you. I can go into Touchwood and I know exactly where Costas is - that’s a nice feeling.”
Niki is appearing in Cinderella until January 31. Tickets available on 01902 429212.
