Grand Hotel, Crescent Theatre, Brindley Place

Big musical numbers, crowded dance routines and dramatic scenes trip over each other in this uncomfortable production.

Set during the teetering financial market before the 1929 Wall Street Crash, Berlins Grand Hotel remains the beacon of the high life in the roaring 20s with more than its fair share of the odd and eccentric.

Ageing ballerina Elizaveta Grushinskaya (Angela Daniels) is all set to cancel her eighth comeback tour until the charming Baron (Andrew Smith) gives her a reason to carry on. Typist Flaemmchen (Charlotte Dunn) arrives with dreams of becoming a Hollywood star. But can anyone find happiness in the bleak world outside the glitz of Grand Hotel?

Despite a live band, impressive set and costumes and powerful performances from Dunn, Horne and Smith, this musical somehow failed to hit the mark.

The musical numbers, far from the catchy, memorable tunes of most West End big hitters, were mostly dull and instantly forgettable while the storyline was heavy going and at times felt forced.

Grand Hotel is at the Crescent Theatre in Brindley Place, Birmingham until Saturday (June 2).
