The BBC Big Band meets MYJO, Birmingham Town Hall
IN most great battles, there’s usually a clear-cut victor. But it’s difficult to say for sure who won this musical scrap, which pitted the seasoned professionals of the BBC Big Band against the wannabes of the Midland Youth Jazz Orchestra.
As the two bands played together on several numbers, it was hard to determine who was making the greater contribution. But it didn’t really matter.
I will say one thing with certainty. By far the best alto saxophone solo of the evening came from Alex Woods of MYJO on Things Are Getting Better.
Over the years, several MYJO musicians have joined the BBC band and one of them, trombonist Andy Wood, was heard at his best on Strange Cargo. A word of praise, too, for the MYJO trumpet section, led by 19- year-old Ben Gaskin, from Knowle, and its drummer Dave Tandy. The powerhouse finale between him and his BBC band counterpart Tom Gordon almost raised the roof.
