KNIGHTS in shining armour will be doing battle at this year’s Shirley Carnival
Although the event won’t be taking place until July 11, the Shirley Lions club are planning ahead and are determined to make sure that this year’s celebration is the best yet.
As well as an appearance by the Period Fencers Guild - who will re-enacting a Medieval battle - there were be demonstrations by Knowle Taekwondo and JJs Dancing Group.
Martin Conlon, carnival chairman, said: “Over the 30 years the Lions have been organising the Carnival, it’s become an increasingly important event on the community’s calendar and the Lions were always looking for new attractions to appear at the Carnival.”
Alongside the performers, there will be traditional kids’ events like sack races and welly wanging. And youngsters will also have the chance to enter a fancy dress competition - with prizes going to the best costume. Proceeds from this year’s carnival will go to the Midlands Air Ambulance.
Treadwells and the Paragron Group will be this year’s main sponsors, but the Lions are still looking to fill their last few plots. Anyone who wants a stall should call Martin on 0121 744 4937.
