SUNLOVERS feeling glum about the British summer should take heart from this colourful musical.
Our story opens on a Caribbean island. A tropical storm is raging - which make a cloudy day in Bognor look like a picnic - and the locals have taken refuge. To soothe a frightened child, the other islanders tells the story of Ti Moune - a peasant girl who falls in love with a wealthy man.
This is a vivid show, with exotic costumes and some really catchy tunes. Weighing in at less than two hours, this is a great production for people who don’t see much theatre or families with young children.
It’s the music that dominates this performance - with only brief bits of narrative to tie the story together. This makes for a pacy show, with audiences propelled from one tune to the next.
The story of romance, which apparently takes inspiration from The Little Mermaid, is simple but effective. It won’t win awards for originality, but it knows when to tug on the heartstrings and will leave you with a great, big smile on your face.
