Your guide to everything in Solihull

Organ is given stirring debut

If you weren’t among the 70 - 80 people who came to St. Mary’s, Hobs Moat, Solihull, last Saturday evening you missed a wonderful organ recital by Paul Carr, writes Juanita Watson, the church’s director of music.

He included not only some very well known pieces but also music to celebrate several composers - the year 2009 is the anniversary year of the birth of Purcell, Mendelssohn and the English composer Basil Harwood as well as of the death of Handel and Haydn.

The date of the recital itself, March 21, celebrated the birthday of J.S.Bach and Paul presented a brilliant performance of the Prelude and Fugue in D (BWV 532) to open the recital.

We were delighted that Paul, a professional and accomplished recitalist, agreed to give the inaugural recital on our new Makin digital organ and also that he compared it so favourably with the sound and sound-reproduction of a pipe organ.

It is hoped to hold more recitals at St. Mary’s Church, Hobs Moat, in the future and we have no doubt that we shall at some time be inviting Paul Carr back to play for us again.
