THIRTEEN years ago, a Cheswick Green teenager left to follow her dreams - now she’s returning to the region as part of a best-selling show.
Kathryn Rooney is appearing in Calendar Girls, a West End production which has caused quite a stir since it opened in 2008.
In this latest run, Kathryn will be joining Gemma Atkinson and ex-Eastenders’ Hannah Waterman and Letitia Dean.
It’s quite a leap from the local drama groups where she started as a child.
“I was interested in performing from a very young age and joined a few local groups,” explained the actress.
“I remember having a careers advice talk and they asked me what I wanted to do. When I said I wanted to be an actress, they said ‘that’s nice dear, what do you really want to do’.”
Kathryn started a leisure and tourism course, but knew it wasn’t what she wanted to do. She remained determined to go to London and perform.
In 1997, she appeared in the Solihull News, appealing for help in getting sponsorship to go to drama school.
Now aged 31, the former St Peter’s School pupil has appeared in numerous shows. Her stint with Calendar Girls began last July and now she’s touring venues nationwide.
“It’s been a great show to be involved with, last year we had Kelly Brook and Arabella Weir and there’s some great new people in this latest tour. I’m looking forward to performing back in the West Midlands - my family still live in Cheswick Green, so it’s nice to come home.”
Calendar Girls tells the story of a Women’s Institute who decide to bare all for charity.
The stage show is based on a film, which was itself inspired by a group of real-life fundraisers.
It will be visiting Birmingham Hippodrome between February 22-27. Tickets are available from www.birminghamhippodrome.com .
