SWING music enthusiasts are in for a treat later this month when two of the country’s leading big bands lock horns in a “battle royal”.
The BBC Big Band and the Midland Youth Jazz Orchestra (MYJO) will share the stage at Birmingham Town Hall to recreate all the excitement of the great musical battles of the swing era.
They will play classic scores from the bands of, among others, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Benny Goodman and Woody Herman.
MYJO, directed by John Ruddick, from Hampton-in-Arden, are in the midst of a busy schedule at present.
On Monday, they performed at an open-air concert in Birmingham’s Victoria Square as part of the Lord Mayor’s Show.
And next month they embark on a tour of southern England and Wales, playing eight concerts in as many days.
The Town Hall concert is on June 17, starting at 7.30pm. Tickets on 0121 780 3333.
