MR JONES was also the first star to plant a tree in the LG Arena’s new Celebrity Wood.
The Welsh crooner planted the tree on Sunday evening, moments before he took to the stage.
The Celebrity Wood is the LG Arena’s very own “environmentally friendly hall of fame”, and has been launched to celebrate the re-opening of the venue after a £29million transformation.
Phil Mead, from The NEC Group, said: “As the first artist to play in LG Arena Opening Season, it was an honour to have such a legendary and iconic musician as Sir Tom Jones planting a tree in our Celebrity Wood.
“This was a very important milestone marking the opening season of the new LG Arena which is set to become the ultimate entertainment destination after this major refurbishment.
“We hope throughout Opening Season and over the years to come, other stars will follow suit and plant a tree as lasting reminder of their performance here.”
The Celebrity Wood runs adjacent to the arena VIP entrance, past which most of the 15,700 concert goers will walk each evening. Each tree will have its very own plaque commemorating the event.
It is the latest environmental initiative at the LG Arena, which also has its very own living wall, featuring 15,000 shrubs, and is linked to a dedicated recycling centre on The NEC site.
