A HOPEFUL phone call has landed Sophie Poulton a role in the biggest show of her life.
When the Solihull News spoke to the 18-year-old, she was busy rehearsing for musical The Wiz.
But as the young actress reveals, it was a job that she thought she’d missed-out on.
“I saw the Birmingham Rep were holding auditions, but it seemed that the date had already been and gone,” she explains.
“But then I gave them a call and it turned out that I was able to go along on another day.
“It never hurts to double-check and I’m so glad that I did in this case.”
Sophie, a former Alderbrook School pupil, describes the show as The Wizard of Oz “with more soul”.
First opening on Broadway in 1975, it was made into a film with Michael Jackson and Diana Ross.
“I think anyone who likes good theatre, a good musical, will enjoy this,” says Sophie.
It’s the perfect practise for the teenager, who is hoping to earn a place at drama school. The only snag is that she’s having to juggle the rigorous rehearsals with a whole other production.
“I’m studying performing arts at Stratford College and we’re doing the Secret Garden as the final show of the course. I’m rehearsing at college all day, coming to Birmingham at night, sleeping, then starting all over again. It hasn’t crossed my mind that I might get the shows mixed up. It’s demanding, but definitely worthwhile.”
The Wiz is being performed by the Birmingham Rep, at the Alexandra Theatre.
It’s on from June 10-18, with tickets available on 0121 236 4455.
